5 Tips to Help Choose Your Perfect Wedding Colors

One of the very first things after saying yes is deciding on the aesthetic of your wedding. There are a lot of beautiful color combinations one could go with, so how do you decide which to pick? Here are five tips we recommend to help envision your perfect wedding.

Tip #1 | Screenshot or Bookmark Your Instagram Faves

A great tool for your brainstorming efforts is Instagram. Follow some Instagram pages (like KMC Weddings & Events) so your Instagram can start learning what you want to see and show you more wedding inspiration.

As you see pictures you like, take a screenshot! Then when you have a good amount of pictures go back and compare your favorites. Is there a certain style you’re drawn to?

If you aren’t sure what it is about those images you like, show your wedding planner. They’re very good at seeing patterns in preferences. We are well-practiced in picking up on style preferences. We can offer recommendations for what we think will suit a client’s personality the best. It’s our goal to communicate the couple’s aesthetic through our wedding designs.

Tip #2 | Brainstorm a List

Open up your phone and write down any color combinations that you would consider using.

  • Black and white

  • Black, white and blush

  • White and blue

  • Grey, blue, yellow

Remember: not everything has to be matchy matchy either. It’s about utilizing different shades and tones of a color (i.e., shades of green like sage, emerald, olive, etc.) Go through your color schemes and consider how each would feel on the day of the event. Remember your colors go beyond the reception. The colors you chose will translate across your invitations, menus, flowers, bridesmaids dresses and so on. So don’t forget to consider all the pieces when thinking about your perfect color palette.

Tip #3 | Look Through Your Wardrobe

If certain color schemes don’t pop into your head right away don’t worry! There are other ways to figure out what you are drawn to the most. Take a look at your closet. Are there mostly dark colored clothes, light, colorful? We buy what we are drawn to and this may be the perfect place to figure out your color preferences and what you want to see on your wedding day.

Tip #4 | Use Magazines or Pinterest for Inspiration

Magazines are a great place to find color palettes that work. Designers and photographers are working behind the scenes of every picture to make sure it is a beautiful, cohesive photograph. So next time you are at the store buy a couple magazines, flip through and mark the pages of sets you like the look of and show your wedding planner things you like. They will be able to help suggest some options for you to consider.

Pinterest is the magazine of the internet. There are already countless Pinterest boards with colors and themes to explore. Go through and make sure to create your own board so you can really zero in on just the photos and ideas you like the most. Pinterest has a lot of options so try to remember just to look for colors and save the silverware and invitations for later. One step at a time and it will all come together beautifully!
